The end of the Modern Noob

The Modern Noob has ended.

Lets summarize it. But first - what was The Modern Noob?

The Modern Noob was my series about learning Modern. It started in October 2013.

Learn more about the Modern Noob here: http://mtgolibrary.blogspot.se/2014/04/the-modern-noob-finale.html

Statistics summary
I played ten decks in The Modern Noob. Here are their match scores  (wins-losses and win%)

Soul Sisters 48-13 (79%)
Gruul Blood Moon 13-6 (68%)
Tron 16-8 (67%)
Taking Turns 10-5 (67%)
Hartford Red 40-23 (63%) including 3-1 in a Daily before the Modern Noob started
Goblins 13-8 (62%)
Mono Black Infect 5-5 (50%)
Death and Taxes 6-7 (46%)
Elemental Combo 2-8 (20%)
Restore Balance 1-4 (20%)

I played four of these decks in tournaments. Lets check out how I did.

My biggest success was with Taking' Turns in this PRE

I played Gruul Blood Moon in an 8-mans

I failed totally with Soul Sisters in an 8-man and 0-2:d the final Daily Event.

The big final event was my Daily Event with RG Tron.

What did I learn?

I learned that Modern is fantastic. I had so much fun doing this.
I learned that you guys loved Modern and I had many more viewers than I ever expected.
I learned that Modern is a format that rewards focused practice
I learned that my old rule of playing 100 matches with a deck before taking it to a tournament was a good rule which I broke here.

Finally, what could I do differently next time? Let me know in the comments below or in the comments to this video.

This video also contains some ideas about what I want to do differently next time, including spending way more money on cards (thanks bots for making this possible).

The Modern Noob Finale

You voted Goblins off the island. Only Soul Sisters and Tron remain and I will play a Premier Event and/or a daily with one or both of them. I will do that before next Sunday and then I will report how everything ended.

The Modern Noob is my series about learning Modern. It has been going on since October and is scheduled to end with me choosing a deck to play in a Premier Event in the first week of June (June 2nd-3rd, I am getting my first dog ever on the 4th, so I better be finished by then).

I will start playing the format again in September after rebuying everything I need.

Soul Sisters vs Mono Green Aggro
The Mono Green Aggro deck has been very popular in the practice room lately.

Tron vs Two Rogue Decks

Goblins vs Goryo's Vengeance

One of the strengths of the Goblins deck is its ability to punish combo decks by being ultrafast.

Recent Matches

Soul Sisters vs Splinter Twin

This match shows quite clearly one of the big problem matchups for Soul Sisters. Having a problem matchup with the #1 deck in the format is a huge problem. On the other hand, nobody has an easy Splinter Twin matchup, do they?

Tron vs Pyromancer Finkel Storm

Also a problem matchup! This is the biggest problem for Tron, even bigger than Splinter Twin.

Goblins vs UR Delver

Proft Stats for single bot, chain and all bots

Recently we introduced the Stats Block and the Profit Graph.  http://mtgolibrary.blogspot.com/2013/12/profit-number-and-value-of-trades.html

We have now enhanced them to include the data from all your bots and from the bots in the same sharing credit chain. By default the Dashboard shows the data for "all" bots. Just click on the links on the right (orange arrows) to navigate the other datasets.

The "single bot" is the bot you are logged in with. You can change that bot using the dropdown menu on the left.  "All bots" refers simply to all your bots, without any distinction, while "chain" is the set of bots sharing credits with the current bot (as definied in the "Sharing Credit" Panel)

Decks of the Modern Noob: Soul Sisters

I am a noob when it comes to playing Modern. That's why I have started a series about learning modern. You can follow it on my YouTube channel (youtube.com/magicgatheringstrat), puremtgo.com, my website mtgostrat.com and here on mtgolibrary.

This is a longer explanation of what The Modern Noob is about: http://puremtgo.com/articles/modern-noob

I will use this space to present the decks I am playing while I am trying to learn the modern metagame. I am mainly playing cheaper decks that have put up results. This deck is probably the most noobish of all the Modern decks - its charm has attracted Noobs for as long as Modern has existed: Soul Sisters.

The idea behind the deck
Gain Life. Gain so much Life that your opponent can not touch you, then win with a White Weenie strategy.

This means that all aggro decks are really good matchups and decks that don't care about Life totals (Tron, Splinter Twin etc) are worse matchups.

The most powerful play in the deck is the first turn Serra Ascendant followed by a Martyr of Sands on turn two, allowing you to swing with a 6/6 flyer with lifelink on turn two.

My current deck list

15 Plains
4 Ghost Quarter
3 Flagstones of Trokair
4 Serra Ascendant
4 Martyr of Sands
4 Soul Warden
4 Soul's Attendant
3 Ranger of Eos
3 Squadron Hawk
4 Ajani's Pridemate
2 Brave the Elements
2 Path to Exile
4 Honor of the Pure
4 Spectral Procession
2 Brave the Elements

SIDEBOARD
------------------
1 Brave the Elements:  When Pridemate can't get through.
4 Rest in Peace: Against Storm, Reanimator ... Living End.
2 Spellskite: Against Splinter Twin
4 Stony Silence
2 Tectonic Edge
2 Path to Exile - against Knight of the Reliquary, Wurmcoil

The decks of the Modern Noob: Time Walk

I am a noob when it comes to playing Modern. That's why I have started a series about learning modern. You can follow it on my YouTube channel (youtube.com/magicgatheringstrat), puremtgo.com, my website mtgostrat.com and here.

This is a longer explanation of what The Modern Noob is: http://puremtgo.com/articles/modern-noob

I will use this space to present the decks I am playing while I am trying to learn the modern metagame. I am mainly playing cheaper decks that have put up results. This deck has some results but has only been played by its maker; Farfere. It is quite unusual.

The Deck
It turns out that there are several Time Walk effects in Modern. What would happen when they are combined in a deck? Well, this is what would happen:

4 Temporal Mastery
4 Cryptic Command
4 Walk the Aeons
4 Serum Visions
2 Jace Beleren
3 Sleight of Hand
4 Howling Mine
24 Island
4 Time Warp
1 Elixir of Immortality
2 Spell Snare
4 Remand

Sideboard
2 Spell Pierce
1 Laboratory Maniac
2 Gigadrowse
2 Swan Song
2 Ætherize
2 Echoing Truth
2 Trickbind
2 Rapid Hybridization
Sideboard plan

Jund: -3 Sleight of Hand, +2 Spell Pierce, +1 AEtherize
Bad matchup

Affinity: -4 Remand, +2 Aetherize, +2 Hurkyl's Recall
50/50

GR Tron: -1 or 2 Spell Snare, +1 or 2 Spell Pierce
Very good Matchup

Melira Pod: -2 Spell Snare, +2 Spell Pierce
Good matchup

UR Splinter Twin: -2 Spell Snare -3 Sleight of Hand, +2 Swan Song, +2 Trickbind, +1 Rapid Hybridization
Very bad matchup

UWR Control: -2 Spell Snare, +2 Gigadrowse
Very good matchup

Scapeshift: -2 Sleight of Hand, +2 Swan Song
Good matchup

GW Hatebears: -4 Remand, +2 Aetherize, +2 Rapid Hybridization
Good matchup
Mono Red Burn: -3 Sleight of Hand, -1 Remand, +2 Spell Pierce, +2 Gigadrowse
Bad matchup

Living End: -2 Spell Snare, +2 Swan Song
Very good matchup, watch out for Ricochet Trap

Kiki Pod: -2 Spell Snare, -2 Sleight of Hand, +2 Spell Pierce, +2 Trickbind
Bad matchup

Strategy
Step 1: Ensure we draw more than one card per round with either Howling Mine or Jace Beleren.
Step 2: Start timewalking
Step 3: Ensure you don't deck with Elixir of Immortality.
Step 4: Ultimate Jace Beleren two times.
Step 5: Profit

What happens if you actually play this crazy deck in a tournament?

I just did that a couple of hours before I wrote this blog post. Check out the full tournament report here: http://mtgostrat.com/2013/11/modern-noob-nov-2-update/

It was extremely stressful and I definitely need to practice more with the deck, but I did win a lot.
