Why it matters that "I can always get more later"

Hi Everyone!

This week I was shopping online for some cards for a standard deck I'm building. I came across Siege Rhino and was surprised by it's super low price. It got me thinking, it sees a lot of Standard play and even some Modern play and it's so cheap, not that I'm complaining. This made me wonder why did cards like Glittering Wish skyrocket in price over an anticipated deck that was fragile with mana dorks and four colors. The deck that used Glittering Wish didn't even pan out like the speculators thought.

It all comes down to the ability to obtain more copies of the card. When you look at the fact that there's no way to get more Glittering Wishes (into the economy), but there is a way to get more Siege Rhinos. So there's a premium to getting more Glittering Wishes and that's reasonable. There's also a discount associated with Siege Rhino because we can get more new Siege Rhinos.

What's the discount for there being the ability to get more Siege Rhinos? There are 53 rares in Khans and let's assume someone somewhere online wants every rare so they should in theory all be $3.99 (the price of a pack on Magic Online). They all should be $3.99 minus the value of commons and uncommons but that's not the case because there are cards that people want more and some that people want less.

If this is a card that more than 1 in 53 people want when they open the pack (I'd make that bet) Siege Rhino should cost more than the cost of a pack (of course minus the value of uncommons and commons)?

So what the heck? Siege Rhino is only $2.60 on Magic Online. There appears to be a discount of $1.39 for the ability to buy packs that could contain Siege Rhino. There are of course many factors, and many Magic Online players just draft and sell their cards or whatever, but they are essentially of no value to that player after they are done with the draft, or I could be wrong about 1 or more in 53 people saying, "I'm not disappointed in this rare" upon opening a Siege Rhino in a pack. As an aside, there is one more factor that is important and worth mentioning. Standard is wide open right now, there are many decks performing well. This is good for the game
but it makes it harder to speculate on cards.

Now the fun part, what can we do with this tedious, boring information? Taking only a couple factors won't give you an exact formula to find over or under valued cards, it will give you a ballpark though if you use the most important factors. The factors vary from card to card so you'll need to use good judgement and do your best to look at the important factors and ignore the unimportant ones.

With ML Bot 8.89, released yesterday, we moved the Special Buddies tab away and put it entirely online. The process started one week ago. You can read it here: http://mtgolibrary.blogspot.com/2014/11/special-buddies-online.html

Please make sure you do not use any SpecialBuddies.txt file and that all your buddies are correctly inserted on the server.

What happened to Vintage on Magic Online?

Hi Everyone!

A couple weeks ago was the finals of the first Vintage Super League. It was streamed live on Twitch and uploaded to Randy Buehler's YouTube channel. From April through July of this year, I produced a series of videos released on YouTube talking about MTG finance. The demand seemed to be for me to make picks.

The problem was that people wanted "free get rich quick" information in the form of picks, or they called that kind of information bogus and accused me of somehow stealing from them. I catered to my audience and gave picks.

There was one person who was notably annoying to me who always tried to use his influence in a certain online community to slam me. Fortunately for me I was able to adequately defend my picks and position with good arguements. This made the person mad that they couldn't just slam me and have me just take it. Little of this is relevant to the article today.

What is relevant is that this guy constantly bad mouthed me and my picks and said, "the only thing you should be investing in is Vintage Masters".

Hmmm....Let's stop and think about that one for a minute...

What did happen to Vintage on Magic Online? It looks like the shiny new thing came along and made the Vintage hype go away.

Additionally, I've talked about it before, VMA cards were all cheap compared to before they came out in VMA so everyone thought Vintage was cheaper to get into. This was not the case, all that happened was cards that weren't in VMA went up to offset the price drop of cards printed in VMA. It was a little cheaper, but not by much.

How do we capitalize on this?

I think Vintage cards are as cheap as they have ever been and it's probably a good time to buy. Now may not be the very very lowest ever, but that's not the name of the game, the name of the investing game is to sell higher than you bought.

If you're looking to wait, I'd say your best opportunity would be a few weeks after they announce Vintage Masters 2 or Legacy Masters. That pretty much guarantees the hype for Vintage or Legacy from the new set will drive prices of cards not in the new set.

Control Panel v4 - Personal Price List - Bot Manual

In this section you will find the ability to update your prices on the fly and query your collection from any web browser.

A: Upload a new personal price list:

Prepare a price file on your computer and upload it to one, or all of your bots quickly and easily.

Once you prepare your pricing file, locate it on your computer and deliver to one or all of your bots.
Please note that the price file must be in a specific format. (See Below)

This is a sample of a price file. Each row is semi-colon separated and consists of a card name, its set, and the prices and quantities you want to use for it.

Here’s a closer look at a row.

A: Set
B: Card Name
C: Regular Sell Price
D: Foil Sell Price
E: Regular Buy Price
F: Foil Buy Price
G: Max Regular Buy Quantity
            H: Max Foil Buy Quantity

B: Create a personal price list:

Instead of creating a price file on your computer for upload, you can also fill out this form to accomplish the same goal.

A: Card row containing the card name, buy/sell price for regular and foils and also the desired quantities.

B: Add Card Price: This button will create a new blank row. Note that the card name auto-populates as you type with all the cards available on Magic Online.

C: Save Draft: Didn’t finish filling in all the information you wanted? You can save your copy and return to it later or tomorrow. The browser does not require to remain open. You can also navigate to this page on another computer to continue working on your prices.

D: Deliver Price List: When you’re done and ready, this button will deliver your prices to the bot(s) that you have checked above.

E: Reset Draft: Clears all fields, removes all rows.

F: Del: Delete this row. This cannot be undone.

Card Pricing v4 - PersonalPrices.txt - Bot manual

What is PersonalPrices?
PersonalPrices is a great way to customize your bot prices to the  exact cards you wish to purchase, the quantity you wish to buy, and the specific price you would like to buy or sell it for.

How does it work?
You edit a file called PersonalPrices, this file can be found in your in your prices folder in the ML bot folder.  This file will overide all other forms of card pricing you have including Pricelimits, PersoanlPercentages, and Cardsmtgo.txt file. When editing this file you can adjust the sell price, foil sell price, buy price, foil buy price, buy quantity, and buy foil quantity, this can be done for boosters or cards. This feature is only available for the Pro ML Bot.

This is an advanced feature and should only be used by bot owners that have lots of time to mange their bots.

Here are some examples:

5DN;Stasis Cocoon;0.024;0.028;0.003;0.006;8;4
ZEN;RARE;4.7;3.5;3.15;2.75;3;5
M14;MYTHIC;3.4;3.6;2.27;1.25;2.6;3.1

If you don't want to buy a card, just set '0' as Buying Quantity, for example:
5DN;Stasis Cocoon;0.024;0.028;0.003;0.006;0;0

If you don't want to set a specific price, rather use the one provided in CardsMTGO.txt, leave the price empty, for example:
5DN;Stasis Cocoon;0.024;;0.003;0.006;8;4

if you want to set prices but not quantity, leave the quantity field empty, for example:
5DN;Stasis Cocoon;0.024;0.028;0.003;0.006;;

5DN;Stasis Cocoon;0.024;;0.003;0.006;8;4
The syntax is: SETNAME;CARDNAME;SELLING PRICE;FOIL SELLING PRICE;BUYING PRICE;FOIL BUYING PRICE;BUYING QUANTITY REGULAR;BUYING QUANTITY FOIL
